It’s that time of year again! Lights hang from the trees, snow is on the ground, and the smell of gingerbread fills the air – the holidays are officially in full swing! While the holidays are often noted as “the most wonderful time of the year”, they can also be the most stressful time of year. Between juggling your job, end of year deadlines, shopping, decorating the house, attending events, working out and family, it can definitely be overwhelming. That’s why it’s so important to practice self-care, especially during this time of year. Here are my top 5 tips for de-stressing your holiday routine:

1. Exercise

Keeping up with your exercise routine during the holidays is extremely important. It not only keeps your body healthy, but it can help keep your sanity as well. When it gets cold outside, we are less likely to walk places, or to be as active as we are in the summer. Moving is such a great way to improve your mood and just feel good!

People are always surprised when I say I go to yoga every single day – but it’s not just because I want to stay in shape. Yoga is absolutely my favorite way to release stress. For just one hour a day, I can truly unplug and just be completely in the present moment. Even if yoga is not your thing, taking one hour a day to run, lift weights, dance, box, or do any sort of movement. Exercise is the best way to practice self-care, during the holidays and beyond.

2. Meditate

Meditation is a wonderful way to practice self-care, and its especially great because you don’t need to leave your house to do it! I find that meditating really helps me get centered after a stressful day/week. It helps calm my anxiety and brings calm and clarity to my day. 3. Drink Lots of Water and Eat Well

While the holidays are often an excuse to eat lots of delicious food (can you say cookies and apple pie?) it is also important to be conscious of your consumption practices. I’ve been keeping a food journal over the last few weeks and it really has helped me keep everything in perspective. I don’t necessarily count calories, but I am more mindful about what I consume in my day-to-day life because of it.

This also extends to alcohol. While there may be an excess of alcohol available during the holidays, try to be mindful of how much you drink. Drinking too much often leads to binge eating, but can also cause nasty hangovers which make you want to eat more. It can really throw off your workout routine as well. Not to say you shouldn’t drink or eat sweets at all if you want to, but try to be conscious about your consumption decisions. Moderation is key!

4. Get Plenty of Sleep

I aim for 8 to 9 hours of sleep each night. While that may sound high for some, I make a very strong effort to be in bed early each night in order to feel refreshed and relaxed the next day.  Can’t fit that many hours in at night? Try taking a nap during the day. Even a short nap can help your body get the rest it needs to be strong, less stressed, and fight bugs during flu season!

5. Take Time To Do The Things You Love

This will look different for everyone. For me, that might be planning a photoshoot or writing a blog post. For others, that may be taking a bath, getting a massage, or maybe splurging on a mani/pedi day with your girls. Whatever it is, find even one day this month to do it. You deserve it!

Since my style is usually more geared towards solids and light patterns, I opted for the Smokey Quartz Athleisure Leggings. For reference, I’m wearing a size small. I was on the fence between a small or a medium since I was right on the cutoff of both according to their SIZE CHART, but I decided to size down, and I’m so glad I did. The leggings are made of a very stretchy material, and the compression seems to work best when you size down.
