Cryotherapy is currently one of the ‘hottest’ wellness trends out there right now – but what does it actually do, and does it truly measure up to the hype? I’m so excited to share my experience at The CryoBar in Chicago!
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the process, Cryotherapy is a treatment where you step into a small booth called a “Cryosauna” and are exposed to extreme cold temperatures that are cooled down to -230 degrees Fahrenheit (Yes, you read that right. Negative two hundred and thirty degrees!) for 2 to 3 minutes. It is recommended that you get the treatment a few times a week minimum to receive the full benefits of the treatment.
So what exactly are the benefits of Cryotherapy? Cold therapy has been around for a long time – many athletes have been recommended to take ice baths to help alleviate sore muscles. Cryotherapy provides similar benefits but in a reduced period of time. While Cryotherapy is great for athletes, it is also beneficial for everyday wellness, health, and beauty! Some of the benefits include:
- Giving you a boost of feel-good endorphins
- Burning 500-800 calories per session
- Reducing inflammation
- Pain relief from arthritis & chronic medical conditions
- Increased circulation throughout your body
- Better sleep
- Reduction in the appearance of cellulite
- Clearing of skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and acne
- Stimulating hair & nail growth
- Increased metabolism
- And so much more!
If you are an athlete or avid workout junkie like me, cryotherapy is wonderful for reducing inflammation and helping your muscles recover after exercising. I experienced less soreness and more energy, even after my most intense workouts.
So, what is the process like? The CryoBar has beautiful facilities and offer changing rooms where you are provided a robe, socks, and slippers to wear during your session. Once you enter the Cryosauna, the technician gives you gloves to wear to protect your fingers from freezing or getting frostbite. Women have the option to wear underwear or nothing. Men are asked to wear underwear. Everything is exposed to the cold except for your head.
I was definitely a bit surprised about the cold the first time I got into the Cryosauna. However, your body slowly adjusts (or numbs), and the time goes pretty quick. The technician even offered me to watch TV during my sessions to help take my mind off the cold. Once the three minutes were over, the technician handed me my robe and opened the doors so that I could step out.
After my sessions, my muscles feel great and I felt lighter & more energized! I always have an amazing night’s sleep after my sessions. Overall, I had a wonderful experience and would definitely recommend it!
If the full body treatment is not your jam, they also have a smaller localized treatment machine that can be used on specific areas of your body such as your face, knees, thighs, etc. Almost any part of the body can be treated externally with the localized cryotherapy treatment!
I want to hear from you – have you ever tried Cryotherapy? If not, would you ever try it? Let me know your questions in the comment section below!
