It’s no secret that yoga has completely changed my life. I stepped onto my mat for the first time 4 years ago, and it’s safe to say I have never been the same since. Yoga gives me the opportunity to disconnect from the outside world and truly focus on myself & my breath. Yoga was the catapult that led me to become healthier, create my blog and even change my career path. I am so grateful for the strength and healing it has brought me, both physically and mentally.
Since moving my practice from the studio to my living room the past few months, I have definitely had to adjust to some major changes. The biggest challenge being the absence of an actual instructor to give personal cues and alignment assists. For those of you who do not usually practice in a studio, yoga teachers will often give personalized instructions if a student needs to adjust their body in a pose. This is a tool used to prevent injury by making sure all your bones & joints are stacked correctly.
While I have been enjoying practicing yoga at home, I do miss having those personal adjustments from an instructor. That’s why I was so excited to find PIVOT Yoga – the first smart yoga wear system with teachers built in to give you alignment feedback in real time!
The PIVOT Yoga shirt and pants have tiny sensors woven inside that wirelessly tell PIVOT Yoga’s free app (and teachers), exactly to how your body is positioned, how to adjust and by how much. It’s like having a personal teacher right in your living room with you! The app also creates a virtual avatar within the app and shows you exactly how your positioning looks in relation to the instructor on the screen. Pretty cool, huh?
The clothes are also 100% machine washable (recommended to wash on cold and hang or lay flat to dry). You also do not have to remove the sensors or battery from the outfit before washing which is awesome! As for size, I would recommend checking the size chart on their website. For reference, I got the top in Extra Small and the leggings in Small. I am 5’2” and my measurements are 34-27-36
How It Works
When you open your beautifully packaged outfit, you will find a shirt, a pair of leggings, a sash, and two charging cables inside. When I put the clothes on, I honestly wasn’t even able to tell where a lot of the sensors were because they are so well embedded in the fabric. The outfit itself is made out of thick yet breathable high-quality fabrics, and the fit is extremely flattering!
Both the shirt and the leggings come with a hidden charging port where you can plug in the charging cables. The charging process is similar to charging an iPhone – the port will flash orange when correctly plugged in, and the light will turn green once fully charged. The outfit takes about 2 hours to charge and has an estimated 5 continuous hours of use.
To put on the outfit properly, put on the shirt like normal and put your thumbs through the holes in the sleeves. There are stirrups on the bottom on the leggings that have sensors embedded above the midfoot area, on top of the cuneiform bones, which allows PIVOT Yoga to tack your ankle movements properly. Make sure these are on the top flat part of your foot facing up. Check that the solid bands on the legs and the arms are facing forward. The dotted part of the stipe on the shirt should be on the side of your forearm. The dotted part of the strip on the leggings should be on your calf. The PIVOT Yoga website has a helpful guide with tips for proper clothes placement HERE
Once your clothes are on, it’s time to connect to the app. The clothes appear as a WiFi network on your phone and should appear as a variation of “PIVOT Wifi”. Once connected, the app will walk you through a short calibration process, starting with voice commands. This helps the app recognize you during class when you want to ask for feedback on your postures.
After you have calibrated your voice and completed a few warm-up movements, you can then find a class you want to take. The app has a variety of class types and levels to choose from including beginner, intermediate and advanced (there will be many more classes added to the app soon). I really enjoyed the Standing Start Class with Molly Grace who is one of PIVOT Yoga’s Teachers along with other industry leaders like Briohny Smyth, Kim Sin, and Brett Larkin. You can learn more about their teachers and class offerings HERE
Once you choose a class, there is a quick movement calibration at the beginning that the instructor will walk you through. Basically, the app will ask for different movements such as raising your arms or lifting a leg. After the calibration is complete, the class will begin. This is where your avatar will appear on your phone screen next to the instructor and will show you where you need to adjust. To verbally check your alignment, ask “How’s this look?” and the app will pause the class and give you direct feedback such as “Raise your left arm by two inches”.
One thing to note is that you do need to be in a quiet space with little to no background noise for the voice registration portion of the calibration process to work. The app is sensitive and may have trouble picking up your voice with talking or music on in the background. However, once part of the calibration process is complete, the app can handle background noise during class.
The full outfit costs $99 and they’re currently offering a 90-day FREE trial with unlimited on-demand access to all the PIVOT Yoga classes available on their app. After the free trial is over, the app will cost $19/mo. They also have a 90-Day money-back guarantee with free returns for U.S. customers.
This product is an amazing tool for someone who is looking to start their home yoga practice, or just wants more personal feedback regarding alignment. Form is such an important part of the physical yoga practice and can help prevent injuries – especially when you start to move on to more advanced poses. Even as a seasoned yogi, I enjoy getting feedback to help deepen and correct my posture. Unless you have another teacher or knowledgeable yogi near you, it can be difficult to get know if you’re doing a pose correctly. On that note, I do know that all of our bodies are different and have different bone structures, range of flexibility, etc. This app is very well designed, and it seems to take all of that into account within their calibration process and multiple-sensor system built into their clothes. The teacher also gives some cues for modifications and the app does seem to recognize that.
I really love this product and love that this technology is available for people who may not be comfortable going to a studio or may not have access to one nearby, etc. It’s also great for traveling if you want to bring a virtual yoga teacher on the go with you!
